Città Sant’Angelo, known in ancient times as Angulum and later Castrum Saneti Angeli, is a charming village nestled among the hills of Abruzzo and a short distance from the Adriatic Sea. Located just over 10 km from our Hotel in Silvi, the charming town is also part of the prestigious club of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.” The origins of Città Sant’Angelo, although uncertain and a cause for debate among historians, seem to date back to the Vestini era. In its territory there are lush crops dedicated to olive groves and vineyards thanks to which wine and extra virgin olive oil of an extraordinary quality are produced, in fact, Città Sant’Angelo is recognized as “Oil City,” “Wine City” and “Cittaslow.”

Of considerable interest is the historic center, located on a hill from which it is possible to enjoy an extraordinary panorama and where the main monuments overlook, among which stands out the stupendous Collegiate Church of St. Michael Archangel with its mighty mass. The Collegiate Church, undoubtedly the symbolic monument of Città Sant’Angelo, was rebuilt in the 14th century and inside it preserves valuable treasures such as an imposing 14th-century wooden statue of St. Michael and the 15th-century sarcophagus of Bishop Amico Bonamicizia.

There are also other churches of extraordinary historical and artistic value in its territory, such as: the Church of St. Francis, founded in the 13th century and refurbished in the 1700s, which has a striking mosaic floor of different shapes and colors with floral designs; the Church of St. Clare, also with a mosaic floor, which is one of the most original examples of Baroque in Abruzzo; the Church of St. Bernard; and the Church of St. Augustine.

As for cuisine, given the geographical location of the locality it is possible to enjoy both land and sea cuisine. Among the typical products and dishes are: mugnaia, a single strand of pasta worked by hand and seasoned with meat sauce; cif e ciaf, an exquisite pork stew; stocche e patene, or stockfish cooked in a pan with potatoes; and li tatune, delicious cookies made with honey, cinnamon, cooked must and ground almonds. In addition, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine, one of the excellences of the Abruzzo region, is produced in these lands.
