The seven sisters of the Teramo Coast are seven delightful and characteristic seaside resorts in the province of Teramo. True corners of paradise, these seven resorts are united under the “Blue Coast” label and represent the major tourist attractions of the Abruzzo region. Nature, art, relaxation and an enchanting sea are the characteristics that distinguish this stretch of coastline that faithfully reflects the geomorphology of the Middle Adriatic. Kilometers and kilometers of coastline with low and sandy golden beaches, equipped for every need, but not only, in fact, the Teramo coast also offers characteristic villages and important monuments to admire. In addition, each municipality offers a dense program of cultural events and eno-gastronomic events.

SILVI

Starting from the south, the first of the seven sisters is precisely Silvi, also referred to as “the pearl of the Adriatic” because of its uniqueness, which distinguishes it from other localities located on the Adriatic coast. Positioned at the foothills of Atri and Città Sant’angelo, Silvi consists of: Silvi Marina, which offers one of the most beautiful stretches of sea in the entire region and an extraordinary seafront promenade where most of the summer social life takes place; and Silvi Paese, a charming village of medieval origins located on a hill overlooking the sea, from which it is possible to enjoy a splendid panorama that sweeps from the Apennine chain to the entire stretch of the central-northern Abruzzo coast. Walking through the streets of the historic center, one can admire the medieval Church of San Salvatore, the Church of San Rocco and the Chapel of the Madonna of Splendor.

PINETO

A well-known seaside resort for the quality of its waters, Pineto derives its name from the characteristic lush pine forest that runs along its coastline for about 4 kilometers. In addition to the pine forest, clear sea and 7 kilometers of beaches with captivating golden hues, Pineto is also known for the ancient tower on the beach of Cerrano, a majestic fortress erected in the 16th century that lends a unique charm to this place. The tower is currently home to theTorre Del Cerrano Marine Park, a protected area that bounds 7 km of coastline and extends up to 3 nautical miles. On the park’s sand dunes there are numerous birds that nest and stay for the summer, including the Fratino, an unusual migratory bird that lays its eggs in the period from April to September. Opposite the Tower, nestled among the waters, is theancient port of the city of Hadria, probably from Roman times.

ROSETO DEGLI ABRUZZI

Considered to be one of the most characteristic of Abruzzo’s marinas, Roseto degli Abruzzi is also known and popularly referred to as “Lido delle Rose” because of the large number of roses that, along with oleanders, used to adorn the streets of the village and spread a very sweet scent in the summer air. Encompassed between the mouths of the Vomano and Tordino rivers, the area, despite land reclamation, retains a certain naturalistic interest for its residual wild vegetation, among which licorice is notable. Beyond the magnificent coastline and the characteristic historic center, in Roseto it is possible to admire buildings of considerable interest, such as: the Church of the S.S. Annunziata, which preserves valuable works by local artists inside; the monumental Bell Tower of the Church of Sant’Antimo; and the Villa Comunale, formerly Villa Ponno, which houses the Pinacoteca and the Municipal Library.

GIULIANOVA

Positioned between the Salinello River to the north and the Tordino River to the south, Giulianova is a historic city whose origins date back to the years immediately following Rome’s conquest of the mid-Adriatic belt, with the founding around 290 B.C. of Castrum Novum Piceni. The city consists of: Giulianova proper, also known as Giulianova Paese or Giulianova Alta, that is, the historic center dating from around the 14th century; and Giulianova Spiaggia, the coastal area developed during the 20th century on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. The town is appreciated by tourists for its very fine sandy shore but also for its rich artistic and monumental testimonies, including: the Cathedral of San Flaviano, an imposing religious building among the most interesting and singular monuments in Abruzzo; the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima dello Splendore, counted among the most famous Italian sanctuaries; and the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, a true artistic jewel.

TORTORETO

Defined as “aristocratic andelegant” for the sobriety of its urban décor and the elegance of the numerous Art Nouveau villas that stand along its entire seafront, Tortoreto can be considered the most refined and sophisticated of the seven sisters of the Teramo Coast. The town is divided into two parts: Tortoreto Alto, a charming medieval village nestled on the hill, which can be reached through a scrubland composed of vineyards and olive groves and after glimpsing the remains of an ancient Roman villa from the 2nd century B.C.; and Tortoreto Lido, with four kilometers of beach characterized by very fine and clear sand, amiably dotted with pines, palms and striking oleanders. Worth visiting: the 17th-century Church of St. Augustine, in Baroque style; the Church of the Misericordia, with Renaissance frescoes by Giacomo Bonfini; the Town Hall, dating from the 1700s; and the imposing Clock Tower.

ADRIATIC ALBA.

Alba Adriatica, better known as “the Silver Beach” for the beauty of its coastline of wide silvery sandy beaches lapped by the blue sea, is one of the most renowned seaside resorts on the Abruzzo coast. Taken by storm during the summer by thousands of tourists from Italy and abroad, Alba Adriatica is rich in bicycle paths and has a lively and effervescent nightlife. Between the beach and the seafrontpromenadeis the renowned “promenade,” a true oasis immersed in the greenery of palm, pine and oleander trees, where interesting musical, artistic and cultural events are organized every evening. Worth visiting: the Vibrata Tower, built in the 1500s with the function of sighting and guarding the coast; and the Gentile Villas, once summer residences of noble and wealthy families.

MARTINSICURO

The northernmost of the seven sisters of the Teramo Coast is Martinsicuro, a modern tourist center, characterized by nature and greenery to which much care and attention is devoted. The resort has a beautiful sandy beach with a shallow sea and, more than anything else, far from the noise and smog of the railroad and state highway. Its territory holds the prestigious remains of the city of Truentum-Castrum Truentinum, founded according to Pliny the Elder by the people of the Liburni. Of particular interest is the historic center, dominated by the 16th-century Tower of Charles V, built at the behest of Martin de Secura as a guard post and defense of the coast from Saracen incursions, where the Antiquarium of Castrum Truentinum is currently housed. In addition to the monumental tower, the historic center is also home to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which houses a magnificent apse painting by Giuseppe Pauri.
